Martha Jean

Martha Jean is a singer/songwriter from a small town just outside Leeds, UK. She grew up playing guitar and singing around the house and was raised on her Dad’s record collection of Portishead, Kate Bush and Radiohead.

Now aged 21, her writing has developed into the honest, lush and melancholic alt-pop of her debut single ‘In Love Without A Lover’. Her up-close vocals demand your attention and her lyrics can cut straight to your heart. Her influences include Phoebe Bridgers, The 1975, Faye Webster, Wolf Alice and Frank Ocean. Martha has recently been shortlisted for the BBC introducing Radio 1 Live Lounge.

The song comes from a collaboration with songwriter/producer and former Kaiser Chief Nick Hodgson who has signed Martha to his new publishing company Prediction Songs in association with Universal Music Publishing. Nick says: “When I met Martha I asked if she had any more songs, a day later she sent me a song called ‘Duct Tape’. She said she’d just written it. I ended up googling the lyrics because I couldn’t believe how good they were and didn’t believe she’d just written them, I knew then I wanted to sign her.”

About ‘In Love Without A Lover’, Martha says: “The song is about being so in love with a person, and knowing that they don’t feel the same, but wanting to do, or be anything in the hope that you might mean something to them.”

Martha relocated to London and moved in with strangers to study music production at BIMM in London, she has just started gigging and doing open mics.
