Kelis releases sixth studio album 'Food'

Kelis releases her sixth studio album ‘Food’ today through Ninja Tune. Kelis - Food

As the title suggests, the new album pays homage to her passion for gastronomy (Kelis is now a qualified chef) with lip smacking tracks named ‘Jerk Ribs’, ‘Friday Fish Fry’, ‘Biscuits N’ Gravy’ and ‘Cobbler’. Talking about the link between her two passions to Esquire magazine, Kelis explained, “Food and music are the most nourishing things that we can, as people, create. You go to a song or you go to a plate. That's what people do.”

‘Food’ was produced by Dave Sitek (guitarist from TV On The Radio and producer for bands including Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Foals) and combines Kelis’ frank and vulnerable vocals – exploring pain, happiness and everything in between - with Sitek’s inimitable sonic imprint. The album’s sound is rootsy without being self-consciously retro, and for all its classic soul and funk influences, it couldn’t have been made any time but now.

‘Food’ has garnered high praise in the music press, with The Telegraph awarding 5/5 and calling it “a steamy musical stew of old soul funkiness seasoned for a modern palate.” Clash rate 'Food' 4/5, describing it as "a fabulous and immediate record… also the warmest, most relaxed and purely enjoyable thing Kelis has ever done",  whilst The Guardian call it “heavenly” and give 4/5.
