"Songwriting is such a human thing. What we're doing is all about connectivity.” - Karen Poole, songwriter.

“Sometimes an overnight success takes 10 years.” - David Gray, Managing Director UMPG UK, and Head of Global A&R.

At the Music Ally Publishing Summit this week, David Gray (Managing Director UK and Head of Global A&R) joined UMPG songwriter Karen Poole and moderator Mark Sutherland for the keynote interview.

One of the UK's most successful and prolific songwriters, Karen Poole has written hits for artists including Kylie Minogue, Will Young, Sugababes, Becky Hill, Lily Allen, Janet Jackson, PinkPantheress, Zara Larsson, David Guetta and many more. In Asia, she has had hit singles with K-Pop and J-Pop superstars - including NCT, EXO, Twice, Girls Generation and Namie Amuro.

Under the theme of ‘Creativity and Change’, the wide-ranging discussion touched on the craft of songwriting, the dynamics of writing sessions, the role of A&R and the opportunities and challenges of new technology.

“I’m just trying to diversify constantly. My motto is just: stay in the river, keep swimming. Don’t get out, because it’s just so important to stay with it and try to diversify as much as you can,” Karen said.

David praised Karen’s approach and adaptability: “She saw an opportunity, writing songs for film, TV, advertising, and then dance music. So many writers get stuck in what they do, it's kind of cool Karen has shifted.”

They both discussed the evolving landscape for songwriters, and the impact of AI technologies on the songwriting process.

“I feel like AI will never stop me writing songs” Karen said, “because it is a super therapeutic thing for me to write a song, and I get so much energy out of it and connecting with other people.”

David agreed: “I think the human side’s always going to be an important part of it, because all people talk about the chemistry in the room and how you’re feeling, the culture.”

A huge thankyou to Music Ally, and headline sponsor ICE Services, for organising such an insightful event, bringing together the people, ideas, and discussions that shape tomorrow’s music publishing business.
