Skye Newman wins BBC Sound Of 2026

UMPG artist and writer Skye Newman has won BBC Radio 1's Sound Of 2026 award.

After a breakout year in 2025, winning the 24th BBC's Sound Of poll sets Skye Newman up for an even bigger 2026. Her debut single “Hairdresser” went viral in 2025 and became one of three UK Top 20 singles released during the year. She opened for Ed Sheeran and Lewis Capaldi, and received support from Elton John, who called her "incredibly talented" and "something else".

"I can't believe that I've got to this point," she told BBC News. "It just feels surreal to know so many people have won this award who I've listened to my whole life. They're in the place that I want to be. So this is just a step further."

2026 will see her first US tour dates, a sold out UK tour and a new EP – followed by a run of festival appearances in the summer.

“To think that Sound Of started the year I was born, 2003 and now I’m a winner!” she continued: “I’m so grateful and wouldn’t be where I am without my people and the BBC supporting me on my journey. Thank you!”

Pete Simmons, Head of A&R UMPG, said: "From the day I met Skye I have been obsessed with her. When she did her first ever studio session and sent me "Hairdresser" we all knew it was the breath of fresh air we have all been waiting for. She’s just getting started, so to see how much recognition she’s getting is so wonderful."

Congratulations to Skye Newman on this hugely deserved recognition. Listen to her latest single “Lonely Girl” below.
