Bernie Taupin has been recognised with the Trustees Award from the Recording Academy. The Special Merit Award is presented to individuals who, during their careers in music, have made significant contributions to the recording industry beyond performance, recognising Taupin’s profound influence as a lyricist and creative force in popular music.
Bernie’s legendary songwriting partnership with Elton John has spawned an evergreen catalogue of well-loved hits including "Rocketman", "Bennie and the Jets", "I’m Still Standing", "Your Song", and many more.
Quoted in Billboard, accepting the award Bernie said: “I know that I’m blessed to do what I do in a world where so many people hate going to work, they don’t want to go to work, they can’t stand their jobs. Songwriters are the luckiest people in the world. From the first day that I ever wanted to write songs, it wasn’t songs so much, I wanted to tell stories. I’ve always wanted to tell stories, but I always wanted to think outside of the box.”
Congratulations to Bernie Taupin on this hugely deserved recognition.
