Bio
Herman van Veen (1945) grew up in Utrecht, where he also attended the conservatory.
In 1965, he made his theater debut with the solo program ‘Harlekijn’ (Nobody’s Servant, Nobody’s Master). Since then, he has been traveling the world with his performances.
He is a regular guest at venues such as the Koninklijk Theater Carré in Amsterdam (now 620 times), the Konzerthaus in Vienna, the Philharmonie Berlin, and the Koningin Elisabethzaal in Antwerp. He has performed series on Broadway, at Carnegie Hall in New York, concerts at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, and is frequently invited to Paris (Olympia, La Salle Gaveau, Théâtre de la Ville) and the Comédie des Champs-Elysées.
He has released around one hundred and eighty CDs, an equal number of books, two dozen plays, and a lot of paintings.
For both his artistic and humanitarian work he has often received flowers. He is the bearer of the Verdienstkreuz am Band des Verdienstordens der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, a Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau, and the Order of the Dutch Lion, among others. Herman has an honorary doctorate from the Free University of Brussels. He received the Planetary Consciousness Award from the Club of Budapest. In France, he received Le Grand Prix de l’Académie Charles Cros de Littérature Musicale. In June 2021, he received the Joachim Ringelnatz Literature Prize in Germany.
Herman is the father of four children, the grandfather of three grandchildren, and the stepfather of the animated character Alfred Jodocus Kwak and the newly born fairytale figure Anne de Poes.
