February 2015 sees the arrival of debut album ‘No Romeo’ by Indiana - a dark narrative set against a backdrop of electronica and innovative instrumentals.
"I write these songs that can appear to be love songs, and seem all nice and sweet," Indiana tells Billboard. "But then you peel away that first layer and chip away at that exterior, and they're all dark and a little bit twisted, and a bit sinister …”.
Discovered by Grammy-nominated John Beck for her “better than the original” take on Joe Goddard’s ‘Gabriel’, the pair collaborated on over half of the album’s thirteen tracks. She came to fame with the stand-out ‘Solo Dancing’, which was released in April 2014 and included in Time’s ‘Best Singles of 2014’s First Half’, while continuing pass 1.5 million YouTube views.
As an album, ‘No Romeo’ continues to build the layers of this songwriter - one who refuses to simply be put on the ‘pop’ shelf. Whether it be the malevolent album opener ‘Never Born’, the tender minimal sound of ‘Bound’, ‘Animal’ and ‘Smoking Gun’, or the original ‘Shadow Flash’, this album asks to be noticed. With a voice reminiscent of Bjork, Beth Gibbons and Roisin Murphy, and remixes by the likes of Joe Goddard and Chris Lake, Indiana’s ‘No Romeo’ is a breath of fresh air. 27 years old when she hit the Top 20, her unique outtake and experience of life gives the record an emotional depth often missing from pop music.
