Three years after their much loved self-titled debut, Danger Mouse (Brian Burton) and James Mercer return as Broken Bells with their second album ‘After The Disco’, released today and including lead single ‘Holding on for Life’.
The album’s theme came from late night conversations between Danger Mouse and James Mercer about the feelings you get the day after the party, and once you grow up and leave your partying days behind.
Talking about Broken Bells, Danger Mouse told Metro, “This is the thing I look forward to the most. It’s different to all the other projects because it’s the most personal and creative outlet. I started out making music in my bedroom and this is the closest thing to it.”
Metro describes the sound of 'After The Disco' as music that “sets pulses and imaginations soaring”, whilst Rolling Stone’s verdict is that, “'After the Disco' is at once sleek and world-weary, often homing in on that sexy moment of malaise when the Seventies wanted to turn into the Eighties so badly but didn't quite know how to do it yet.”
2014 marks the tenth anniversary of Danger Mouse’s ground-breaking experiment ‘The Grey Album’, since which he’s gone on to establish himself as an artist, songwriter, producer and composer. He's achieved significant commercial success as one half of Gnarls Barkley, plus has production and songwriting shares on albums including Black Keys ‘El Camino’, Norah Jones ‘Little Broken Hearts’ and Electric Guest ‘This Head I Hold’. He has also been working on producing U2’s new album, including the new single ‘Invisible’.
