Marques Toliver releases his debut album ‘Land Of CanAan’ today.

Taking his first steps towards a musical career at the age of 10 when he began training in classical violin, Marques got his talent noticed busking on the streets of New York and then London, which led to numerous gigs playing live and recording with artists such as Holly Miranda, Grizzly Bear and Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson – before signing to Bella Union.

‘Land of CanAan’ follows his critically acclaimed ‘Butterflies Are Not Free’ EP, for which the New York Times praised him for his "considerable talent," and which led Line of Best Fit to note, “there’s an overwhelming sentiment that this boy is going to be a very important feature of music to come over the next few years.”

Marques explains that much of the inspiration for the album came from reading the autobiography of Frederick Douglass ‘My Bondage My Freedom’ – an account of his transition from slavery to liberty. "I take my own route," he says of his adventurous in life to date and of the unique fusion of R'n'B and classical music showcased on ‘Land of CanAan’.

The 405 praise his debut, awarding 9/10 and commenting; “’Land Of CanAan’ is essentially flawless, already a real contender for one of the year's greatest releases, and it couldn't be a more perfect introduction to his musical career.”
