Tegan and Sara release new album 'Heartthrob'

Tegan and Sara release their seventh studio album ‘Heartthrob’ today.

The new album bears all the hallmarks of a Tegan and Sara record – “terrific songs full of lust, longing and regret” – but according to Sara ‘Heartthrob’ has “a bigger, bolder, happier sound” than anything they have done before.

Their approach to writing was different for this album too, as Tegan explains, “We wanted to cover topics like love and relationships but from a different angle. I'd never romanticised love the way that I did on this record before.”  The album was produced by Greg Kurstin, Justin Meldal-Johnsen and Mike Elizond - with Sara summing up Kurstin’s role as, “Greg took everything we do and put it on steroids.”

The positive reviews have been pouring in: NME have called ‘Heartthrob’ “a triumph” and “an early contender for pop record of 2013”. According to The Telegraph “almost every one of the 10 tracks is catchy and distinctive enough to become a hit”, Popjustice called it "100% solid pop music that’s as instant as it is amazing" whilst Drowned in Sound asserted that “'Heartthrob' verges on a perfect pop record.”

The duo have certainly succeeded in their aim to create a record that sounds, “unrecognisable but still undeniably Tegan and Sara”. Tegan sums up;  “As a band and as writers, we have to keep pushing our music and ourselves to new places. I want people to hear that evolution. But I also want them to hear their own stories blasting from the speakers.”
