Njerae is one of Kenya’s most compelling new voices, part of a generation of East African artists reshaping the region’s contemporary R&B and Afro-indie sound. Born Njeri Mwengi, she built her reputation through emotionally direct songwriting and understated vocal delivery that quickly found a home with young audiences. Her lyrics explore the longing, uncertainty and vulnerability that go along with modern relationships. Quietly powerful storytelling sits at the centre of songs such as Aki Sioni and Anayefaa. Njerae is also part of a new generation of Kenyan artists helping the country’s contemporary music scene assert a stronger local identity, blending global influences with distinctly Kenyan storytelling.
