Bio
Dick Lee is a Singaporean singer-songwriter and one of the pioneers of modern pop music in Southeast Asia. He began his music career as a teenager, performing in talent contests at the age of 15 with bands such as Harmony and Dick and the Gang, a group he formed with his siblings.
Lee released his first album, Life Story, in 1974. His 1989 album The Mad Chinaman became a major success, reaching platinum status within three months. The album was especially popular in Japan and received strong reviews. Japanese producer Makoto Kubota later invited Lee to work on his next album, which led Lee to move to Japan in 1990 to further expand his career across Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan.
In 1998, Lee joined Sony Music Asia as Regional Vice President of Artist & Repertoire (A&R), a role he held until 2000.
A key theme in Lee’s music is identity and Asian culture. His songs combine Asian folk influences with modern pop and rap, often using Asian languages and Singlish to express Singapore’s multicultural identity.
Over the years, Lee has collaborated with many major artists, including Hong Kong stars Aaron Kwok, Andy Lau, Anita Mui, and Sandy Lam.
Lee is also widely known for composing the Singapore National Day song Home for the National Day Parade in 1998, which remains one of the country’s most beloved songs. He also wrote We Will Get There for the 2002 National Day Parade and served as the event’s creative director that year.
Although he no longer performs regularly, Dick Lee continues to compose music and remains an influential figure in the Southeast Asian music industry.
