Jessica Mauboy
Pop icon, actress, musician, role model - Jessica Mauboy is a quadruple threat with a conscience, a woman with serious acting chops and multiple accolades, an accomplished songwriter and piano player, and she owns her effervescent and incredibly engaging energy.
Prone to an impromptu acapella and a raucous and instantly recognisable laugh, Jess has not left our screens, radios or minds since she burst onto TV is 2006.
Thanks to the juggernaut that is Eurovision, the globe soon got to know the particular tone, pitch and delivery of this proudly Australian Indigenous woman, someone we already knew and loved as our own prodigious R 'n' B trailblazer, who has expertly made the mix of R 'n' B, pop, funk, soul, hip hop and dance her infectious signature sound.
You’ll know a Mauboy song when you hear it because Jess makes every song her own, each tune laced with trills you instantly recognise as hers.
She’s a history maker too: the first indigenous woman to achieve three consecutive weeks at number 1 (for ‘Songs from the Original TV Series – The Secret Daughter’ album), in 2016. Forever flying the flag for Aussies and the Aboriginal community, Jess was the first non-European solo artist invited to perform as a guest at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2014.
Jess is not only a fan favourite, she’s earned the respect of her industry peers, as an ARIA winner for ‘Best Female’ in 2013, and an AACTA award winner for her engaging role in ‘The Sapphires’.
Acknowledgement for her adeptness at songwriting has come in the form of an APRA award for ‘Urban Composition of the Year’ in 2009, co-writing ‘Running Back’, a song recorded with Flo Rida.
Jess also co-wrote the song seen by 186 million viewers - ‘We Got Love’ - when she was invited back as an entrant at Eurovision in 2018, and has penned over a dozen other pop/ballad high charting hits ('Beautiful' and 'Pop A Bottle' among them).
With 'Hilda' her latest and most personal work to date, Jess has an impressive body of work: she’s released seven albums, comprising of four studio albums and three soundtrack albums, one live album, one EP, and 41 singles.
From this, Jess has achieved six top 10 albums, 16 top twenty singles, with a whopping 600 million+ streams. She's taken her songs on the road with three successful tours since 2012.
A conscientious custodian of her heritage, Jess is also a proud ambassador of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF), spending time in many remote communities, understanding the challenges and barriers to literacy.
She’s reached that level of accomplishment and maturity to want to pay homage to her elders, both familial and ancestral, remaining our national treasure, and the most recognised R ’n’ B pop icon of our time.
A natural born feminist, activist, and ballad and pop aficionado, Jessica Mauboy is an enduring part of the fabric of Australian music.
