Alex The Astronaut Releases New Single 'Waste Of Time'

Alex The Astonaut has released her brand new single ‘Waste Of Time’ just ahead of her performances at Spin Off Festival and Splendour in The Grass. ‘Waste of Time’ was premiered on Good Nights with Bridget Hustwaite last Thursday on triple j and was immediately added to rotation.

Kicking off in true Alex the Astronaut fashion, with her now-signature, spritely acoustic strumming and conversational storytelling ‘Waste of Time’ bursts into handclaps, tambourine and wobbly blasts of Casio-synth towards a hook of a chorus that will earworm you for days. At the centre of Alex’s songs are her tumbling words that tell the real story. “Lately I’ve come to find that all I want is one incredible waste of time,” she sings, contemplating undue pressures that have kept her running life’s race, hinting that dead time is precious time if spent right with the right people.

Written while Alex was on tour in London to play The Great Escape, working with producer Jonathan Quarmby, ‘Waste of Time’ came together quickly in the studio. Alex says, “I’ve always been a very particular person, maybe a bit of a control freak, and that meant that I wrote songs about love in a very controlled way. I think ‘Waste of Time’ is about me letting go of that.”

This new single comes on the heels of a busy period for Alex the Astronaut. A co-headline national tour in April alongside Stella Donnelly saw the pair selling out shows across the country before Alex headed overseas to play at The Great Escape in the UK and Prima Vera in Spain. If you missed her incredible performance at Splendour, make sure you catch her on Yours & Owls, Wollongong, late September.
