Pieter Bourke wins 'BEST EVER FOREVER' award

UMPG Australia would like to congratulate our prolific songwriter, Pieter Bourke for recently winning a ‘BEST EVER FOREVER’ award. You can’t beat THAT for the category of categories!

The award is a prestigious Italian advertising honour celebrating quality, creativity and effectiveness in Italian advertising over the past 30 years. It was presented as part of the 44th Key Awards held in Milan during November 2012. Pieter was awarded for his work, Sacrifice which was used as the soundtrack for the winning Telecom Italia advertisement, simply titled The “Gandhi” Commercial.

Alongside other creatives who worked on the spot, our very own Giancarlo Losciale from UMPG Italy was at the Awards to collect our diploma as Music Publisher and supplier of Pieter’s prestigious track.

The advertisement which first went to air in 2004 was directed by Hollywood heavy-weight Spike Lee, and uses excerpts from a speech made by Gandhi at the Inter-Asian Relations Conference in 1947.

Gandhi’s speech focused on cultural and religious integration, an issue which remains a hot & relevant topic today. The commercial, which shows people viewing the speech through various media platforms is based around the idea “If he could have communicated like this, what world would we have today?” A groundbreaking concept and poignant given technological progress since the spot was produced.

The “Gandhi” commercial is not the first high profile use of Sacrifice. Originally written by Pieter and long his long-time collaborator, multi award winning Lisa Gerrard for their album Duality (1998), Sacrifice would eventually go on to form part of the movie soundtrack for Michael Mann’s The Insider, also penned by Bourke and Gerrard. Works from The Insider have been licensed for multiple uses in all range of media in both Australia and internationally out of context showing how effectively music score can transfer & apply to a number of varying synch applications over time.

As well as releasing records and movie scores together, Bourke has assisted Lisa with her solo projects and as a touring member of the band Dead Can Dance.

Showcasing his versatility, Pieter is also co-founder of futuristic dub-duo Secret Masters. A musical partnership between himself and Donnie Dub (aka Brian Westbrook) that has so far produced two well received dub-reggae records. He has also been prominent in bands Snog and Soma.

Pieter’s next project will be released under his own name and is slated to be an instrumental solo album of “other worldly compositions, where the past, and future come together through a combination of cinematic strings, subtle electronics and deep spacious ambience" we look forward to its release in 2013.
