Universal Records released the long-awaited debut solo album from Lost Boyz frontman Mr. Cheeks in September 2001. Titled John P. Kelly, the 15-track album features collaborations with Stephan Marley (Erykah Badu, The Roots), Easy Mo Bee (Notorious B.I.G., Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg), Big Gipp (from the Goodie Mob), Bink! and Horace Brown, among others. The title of the album pays homage to Cheeks' late grandfather and his cousin - who recently succumbed to stomach cancer. The album's lead single, "Lights, Camera, Action!" is in the spirit of such Lost Boyz classics as "Jeeps, Lex Coups, Bimaz & Benz," "Get Up" and "Lifestyles of The Rich And Shameless." Produced by Bink!, the song contains an infectious hook that was strongly embraced by radio. The Queens, NY-based Lost Boyz, comprised of Mr. Cheeks, Pretty Lou, Spigg Nice and the late Freaky Tah, blazed on to the scene in 1995 with the release of their nearly platinum debut, Legal Drug Money. The four-man rap unit followed up in 1997 with their gold-certified sophomore effort, Love Peace And Nappiness. In 1999, the group experienced tragedy with the death of group member Freaky Tah. Their third album, 1999's LB IV Life became a tribute to Tah, who appeared on several songs recorded before his untimely death. Mr. Cheeks continues to pay tribute to Freaky Tah on one of John P. Kelly's tracks, the spine chilling and melodic "'Til We Meet Again," featuring the vocals and production of Stephen Marley (son of the legendary Bob Marley). Although Mr. Cheeks has launched a solo career, he gives fans assurances that the Lost Boyz are still intact.
