Biography
Platinum-Selling artist Jill Scott’s critically acclaimed debut album, Who Is Jill Scott? Words & Sounds Vol. 1 (Hidden Beach/Epic), has sold over 2.1 million units, garnering Scott 3 Grammy nominations (including Best New Artist), nominations for 3 NAACP Image Awards, 3 Brit Awards, and a Soul Train award for Best R&B Female Album. She shared the stage with Aretha Franklin for VH1’s Divas Live and opened the show for Sting’s North American Tour.
Scott grew up in north Philadelphia and began her career reading her own poetry. She toured with the Canadian cast of “Rent,” reading poetry at the local art spot, October Gallery. Her performance was caught by Amir, drummer of the Roots, who invited her to join the band in studio. The collaboration resulted in the composition, “You Got Me,” which became a top 40 pop hit for Erykah Badu.
She has also contributed her vocal talents on multi-platinum collaborations with The Roots, Eric Benet (a remix of the song “When You Think Of Me”), Will Smith (“The Rain” from Willenium), and Common (Like Water For Chocolate). Her voice can also be heard on soundtracks including Down To Earth, Kingdom Come, In Too Deep, and Wild Wild West.
In late 2001, Jill Scott released a new album entitled, Experience: Jill Scott 826+ (Hidden Beach/Epic), which features eleven songs recorded live, and a second disc of unreleased studio recordings.
