Glen Ballard and Alanis Morissette

Biography

Glen Ballard is a five-time Grammy award winner whose diversity has been demonstrated by the fact that he has risen to the top of the Modern Rock, Pop, Jazz, AC, country and R&B charts and has sold nearly 150 million records. As a producer, songwriter, arranger, pianist, guitarist, programmer, screenwriter, filmmaker, Ballard brings quite a lot to the table in terms of range and experience. He's worked with an incredible roster of talent, from Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, No Doubt, Aerosmith, Van Halen, Shakira, Alanis Morissette, Anastacia, Wilson Phillips, George Straight, Earth, Wind & Fire, Aretha Franklin, Teddy Pendergrass, Dave Matthews....it's an impressive list that continues to grow.

Jagged Little Pill, the chart-topping, multi platinum album Ballard co-wrote and produced for Morissette and named by Billboard as the Top Pop Album of the 90’s, resulted in five Grammy nominations and 4 wins of his own and remains the top selling solo album of all time, with worldwide sales of over 30 million units. It is also the top selling artist debut album of all time. Among the prestigious awards Ballard garnered for the 38th annual Grammy Awards are Best Rock Song ("You Oughta Know"), Best Rock Album and the prestigious Album of the Year. The momentum for Jagged Little Pill continued the following year with Ballard’s Grammy nomination for Record of the Year for “Ironic,” the hit single produced by Ballard and co-written with Morissette from the Jagged Little Pill disc. It is a rare occurrence that a single track is nominated for a project that was named Album Of The Year previously. Ballard also received a Grammy in the category of Best Video of the Year for “Jagged Little Pill.” His latest collaboration with Alanis Morissette, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, released on the Maverick label in November of 1998, garnered outstanding reviews and certified triple platinum in the US alone.

2001 proved to be another auspicious year for Ballard, starting with the release of the Dave Matthews Band album, Everyday, on the RCA label, which entered the Billboard charts at #1 and has since achieved triple platinum status. Ballard co-wrote and produced the entire 12-track album. Upcoming projects include Sheila Nicholls, new singer/songwriter, and superstar acts Seal and The Backstreet Boys.

Java Records, which Ballard formed in 1996, recently joined forces with Island/Def Jam, and under the terms of this multifaceted agreement, Ballard will produce recordings for his Java roster of artists and for Island Def Jam artists.

Ballard’s other collaborations include the enormously popular rock band No Doubt, whose platinum album, Return of Saturn, out on the Interscope Records label, received rave reviews, and he also produced and co-wrote the soundtrack for the animated Titan AE, a futuristic sci-fi film from 20th Century Fox, featuring the voices of Matt Damon, Drew Barrymore and Bill Pullman. Ballard also produced two cuts for Van Halen’s Greatest Hits, including the hit song, “Me Wise Magic” and co-wrote three cuts for Aerosmith’s Grammy-nominated album, Nine Lives, including the #1 AOR hit, “Falling In Love (Is Hard On The Knees)” and the recent 1998 Grammy-winner, Pink.

Born in Natchez, Miss. in 1953, Ballard started playing the piano as soon as he could crawl and eventually added the guitar to his repertoire. He wrote his first song before his 10th birthday and was a familiar face in local rock bands beginning in the fifth grade.

Ballard studied English, political science and journalism at the University of Mississippi, where he graduated with honors. While he was at Ole Miss, the future megahit producer recorded his first and only solo record, a self-titled album that sold well in regional distribution. He turned down fellowships to attend both graduate and law schools, intent upon a career as a songwriter. He packed his bags within a week of graduation and moved to the West Coast in 1975.

He took with him his love of diverse musical styles. Jerry Lee Lewis lived within 10 miles of his home, and young Glen grew up watching him perform. Ballard was also a fan of southern R&B singer Irma Thomas, Memphis-based soul singer Al Green and all the great blues and jazz emanating from New Orleans. The Beatles-led British invasion struck yet another positive chord and expanded his appreciation of popular music.

Through sheer luck, Ballard immediately joined Elton John's organization in Los Angeles. He started out as a low-level assistant and eventually wound up playing piano for Kiki Dee. He was writing constantly, and when Dee recorded his song "One Step" in 1978, Ballard had his first chart single. That success enabled him to secure a professional songwriting job at MCA Music Publishing.

Though he was earning only $100 a week, Ballard was engaged full time in the craft he loved. In the late '70s and '80s, Ballard composed scores of songs, including "What's On Your Mind," a Quincy Jones-produced hit for George Benson; "Why Is This Girl Giving Me Fever," an international sensation recorded by French superstar Johnny Hallyday; and "Dance Electric," the first of several recorded by the Pointer Sisters.

Jones took note of the young composer and took him under his wing. Through that connection, Ballard's "Try Your Love Again" appeared on James Ingram's 1983 debut album, It's Your Night. Pleased with his young disciple's progress on this and other projects, Jones decided Ballard was ready to climb the next rung on the musical ladder. The apprentice wrote and produced two tracks for Patti Austin, "It's Gonna Be Special" and "Shoot The Moon." By the time the R&B singer's album came out in 1985, Ballard was writing and producing full time for his mentor at Qwest Records.

For two years, Ballard learned to apply his wide-ranging musical sensibilities fast and furiously. He produced R&B artist Evelyn "Champagne" King; Teddy Pendergrass, a proponent of Philadelphia sound; and Jack Wagner, a "General Hospital" actor-turned-pop star. One of the songs Ballard wrote for Wagner was the beguiling "All I Need," which soared to the top of Billboard's pop chart.

Ballard continued to evolve both as a songwriter and producer. Spurred by his success, the studio wizard went independent. He penned "You Look So Good In Love," a No.1 country hit for George Strait. The same year, he co-wrote "Man in the Mirror," which appeared on Bad, Michael Jackson's acclaimed sequel to Thriller. Produced by Quincy Jones and featuring Ballard's synthesizer arrangement and keyboards, "Man in the Mirror" raced to the top of the R&B charts and today remains one of the King of Pop's -- and Ballard's -- most popular singles.

Jones and Jackson had also recorded a Ballard composition, "Nightline," for Thriller. Although "Nightline" didn't appear on the finished product, it was later successfully recorded by a handful of artists including Randy Crawford and the Pointer Sisters. "When I found out it wasn't going to be on there," Ballard recalls, "I just said, 'I'll get on the next one.' And the truth is, I got on the next two, which cumulatively sold about 50 million. It turned out to be good karma. I feel that if 'Night Line' had been on Thriller, I would never have written 'Man in the Mirror,' which is an infinitely better song, and one of the best in my catalog."

His golden touch continued in 1988, when he wrote "State of Attraction" for Paula Abdul, a former cheerleader for the Los Angeles Lakers. Her album, Forever Your Girl, would sell 15 million copies and become the most prominent debut in history. In 1990, Ballard took home the Grammy for Best Rock Song for arranging “The Places You Find Love,” sung by Chaka Khan and Sieda Garrett, which appears on the Quincy Jones album, Back On The Block.

That proved to be a harbinger of things to come. He began working with three young women with famous parents -- Carney and Wendy Wilson, daughters of Beach Boys legend Brian, and Chynna Phillips, scion of Mamas and Papas principals John and Michelle. The eponymous titled Wilson Phillips album sold millions of copies, earned three Grammy nominations for co-writer/producer Ballard and resulted in a pair of No. 1 pop singles -- "Hold On" and "Release Me." Ballard later co-wrote and produced their 1992 follow-up, Shadows and Light.

While he was initially in the studio with Wilson Phillips, he was simultaneously producing his song, "The Places You Find Love," for Barbra Streisand's gold-certified album, Till I Loved You. Now one of the most prolific songwriters and producers in the business, Ballard raced from one project to another. In 1991, he wrote and arranged "Keep The Faith" for Michael Jackson's Dangerous album and introduced a new artist named Curtis Stigers. The latter's self-titled debut sold millions and resulted in the Ballard written and produced Top 10 pop single, "I Wonder Why." To date, Ballard has written hundreds of hit songs that have been recorded by a Who's Who of the music industry: Al Jarreau, Earth, Wind & Fire, Sheena Easton, Celine Dion, Philip Bailey and K.T. Oslin among many, many others.

Along the way, Ballard captured numerous awards, including annual ASCAP citations for such top pop radio performances as Jack Wagner's "All I Need" (1986), Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror" (1989), Wilson Phillips' "Hold On" (1991, '92) and "You're In Love" (1992) and Curtis Stigers' "I Wonder Why" (1993). Ballard was named “Songwriter Of The Year” 1997 by the National Academy of Songwriters and ASCAP and received the prestigious “Governor’s Award” from NARAS (also in 1997).

Ballard’s relationship with MCA Publishing, now Universal Music Publishing Group has continued throughout his career, and a sheet music collection titled The Glen Ballard Songbook, containing 11 of the songwriter's most familiar tunes, has been published by the Hal Leonard Publishing Corp.
