Biography

Canadian Music Hall of Famer Bruce Cockburn has a rich and varied catalog of work and has received considerable critical nods. His catalog has been ranked alongside those of Joni Mitchell, Richard Thompson, and Leonard Cohen. His songs, past and present, continue to be heard through interpretations by Barenaked Ladies, Jimmy Buffett, Maria Muldaur, The Rankins, Dan Fogelberg, Jerry Garcia, Holly Near, and Chet Atkins, among others.

Cockburn’s twenty gold and platinum records and ten Juno Awards are a testament to his significant presence on the landscape of popular culture.

Cockburn began his musical career traveling through Europe and performing in the streets and later enrolled at Boston's Berklee School of Music. Prior to recording his self-titled solo debut in 1970, Cockburn played organ in a Top 40-cover band and then harmonica in a blues group. Cockburn's first decade of work (1970-1979) is largely literate, often with a strong Christian tone and mystical, devotional lyrics. In 1979, He had a major U.S. single, "Wondering Where the Lions Are," which peaked at No. 21. The album, Dancing in the Dragon's Jaw (Colombia), went to No. 45. Through much of the 1980s Cockburn concentrated on more humanitarian and political subject matter as he traveled extensively across several continents absorbing a wide musical palette. In 1984 Cockburn produced, "If I Had a Rocket Launcher." The song's accompanying video documented the war-torn conditions in Central America and gained a fair amount of exposure on MTV. In the 1990s, Cockburn sound recalled his earlier works, as he ended a long affiliation with Columbia to jump to Rykodisc for his 1997 release, Charity of Night.

With a career spanning more than 30 years, Cockburn continues to thrive and create new works. In 2002, he released Anything, Anytime, Anywhere (Rounder), which features his hit singles from 1979-2002.
