ABOUT BOOTSY COLLINS:
Best known as the bassist with Parliament/Funkadelic (and later the leader of Bootsy’s Rubber Band in the late 70’s) Bootsy Collins is one of the chief exponents of funk music. Growing up in Cincinnati, Ohio, Bootsy began playing guitar and bass at an early age. When he was only 14, he was the leader of a group that became James Brown’s backing band, The J.B.’s. In 1971 after two years of touring The J.B.’s began to develop in their own direction as the House Guest Band, incorporating psychedelic influences into their sound.
When Bootsy met and joined forces with George Clinton and his band, The Funkadelics, the funk entity known as both Parliament and Funkadelic was born.
Throughout the 70’s, Parliament/Funkadelic grew to be known for their zany stage antics as well as the cutting-edge music. In 1975, Bootsy released his first album with his own group, Bootsy’s Rubber Band, while Parliament/Funkadelic also continued as a group.
Now years later, classic funk tracks like “Dr. Frankenstein” (1977), “Flashlight” (1978), and “Theme From The Black Hole” (1980) are recognized by a whole new generation of fans as hip-hop/dance sampling favorites. Bootsy remains active with session work for many major artists including Sly & Robby, Herbie Hancock, Cyndi Lauper, Deeelite, producer Bill Laswell, and Stevie Salas.
