THE HISTORY OF GROUNDSTAR LABORATORY

Opened in 1963 as one of Nashville's First Purpose-Built recording studios, Groundstar Laboratory has been owned and operated by some of popular Music's most elite names.

In 1972 Roy Orbison bought the building from two Nashville publishers, dubbing the room "US Recorders".

1978 Saw the purchase of the room from Roy by Ronnie Milsap, who rebuilt the room in the then cutting edge "westlake" style. In 1985, the Neve 8128 dropped in. Flying Faders were added in 1988, and everything remains today. Ronnie called his room "Groundstar Laboratory"

Purchased in 1995 by then MCA Music Nashville, a renovation process modernized the offices and writer areas surrounding the studio. Wisely, it was decided to leave the soundstage and the control room intact and without modern modification.

Over the years the studio has been host to many of music row's greatest names. Ronnie Milsap, Roy Orbison, Ricky Skaggs, Marty Stuart, Tommy Sims and Bruce Cockburn. Producers and Engineers such as Tony Brown, Kyle Lehning, Bill Schnee, David Thoener, Chuck Ainlay and Many more have enjoyed making records in this room for the past 39 years.
